One Week Portrait 2020

This year I participated in the One Week Portrait Challenge hosed by Printable CC Academy.

This is my first ever fully digital art piece as well as portrait.

It was a pleasure to take part in the challenge and it's inspired me to do more digital work.

DAY 5: Finishing

Although encouraged to experiment to develop an individualisitc portrait style, I opted to keep it clean and simple, adding only a blur to create focus and dynamic.

It's not a perfect likeness portrait but it's a great start.

DAY 4b - Detailing continued.

I finished rendering the hair and the face. I corrected the shape of the nose and mouth too, but lost the shape of the eye brows when I rendered them.

DAY 4a - Detailing

It took me two days to render the detailing and the majority of that was spent on the hair. It's my first time rendering realistic hair.

I also removed the linework as I completed parts of the portrait.

DAY 3: Blending Soft and Hard Edges.

The fun begins but the trick is to not overblend. My ref didn't have any hard shadows, but I wanted to keep some hard contrast going, which I did mostly on the left side cheek and I added a cast shadow under the neck,

DAY 2: Colour Blocking.

As the name says, this was putting in the colours and blocking them using a hard brush. In retrospect I probably could have blocked the hair more accurately, it would have made things easier later down the line.

DAY 1: Sketch

I kept the sketch as simple as possible, trying to get the proportions correct and just indicating the key landmarks for later detailing.

I chose this ref for the challenge as I wanted to progress how I use colours in my skin tones.
